NORTHERN YOUTH SUMMIT ON ELECTORAL REFORMS
From 3rd to 5th June 2009, youths/students from 19 Northern states will gather in Jos to discuss the critical issue of electoral reforms and what should be the Youth position on the electoral reform as the National Assembly begins the amendment process.
Around 40 representatives from youth organizations and tertiary institutions in the North will attend the Northern Youth Summit on Electoral Reform. The outcome of the summit will consist a position paper outlining what Youths in the north feel should be the position on the electoral reform. This position paper will be addressed to the media and major stakeholders.
The Youth Summit will allow young people from across northern Nigeria to voice their views on the Electoral Reform and to express their aspirations for the future giving the obstinacy of the current government on defeating the reform agenda. Their conclusions will be conveyed to the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly, where it is believed to be the battle field for the debate on the Electoral reform.
Over 40 young participants from youth NGOs & student groups from all 19 Northern states will attend to discuss issues of particular concern to them on the electoral reform. There will be two participants from each Northern State, plus representatives of international organizations and representatives of the National Youth Council of Nigeria.
The summit will herald the evolution of an integrated mechanism that will engage Nigerian youths in the much needed and talked about electoral reform. With the pride of place accorded electoral reform in the 7 point agenda of the present administration, an opportunity has presented itself for all young Nigerians to think electoral reform and work electoral reform. "This is a Turning Point for Nigeria”.
Objectives of the Youth Summit
The objectives of the Youth Summit are three-fold: to create a network of youth organizations and youth leaders committed to electoral reform, to influence the political decision-making process and to serve as a catalyst for a series of action-oriented initiatives at the local and national level that fully involve youth in electoral processes.
Statement of Need
Young people have much to contribute to the Electoral Reform Project: with their vital experience and activism, they can engage positively in a constructive debate on the electoral reform. Their personal knowledge of what it means to grow up and live in Nigeria – enduring practical everyday problems of which politicians with a steady income may have no experience – allows young people to make decision-makers aware of the implications that their decisions have on the lives of citizens: and specifically, the future of our democracy.
Young people are the ones who will be most affected by the dimension that members of the National Assembly take on the electoral reform therefore, it is imperative that they give their opinions to those making legislative and political decisions.
Methodology
The summit is been planned to last for two days using a combination of plenary and thematic working groups panels in a youthful environment and based on participatory and non- formal education methodologies.
TARGET PARTICIPANTS:
Young people from religious groups, tribal associations, student organizations, civil society organizations, physically challenged persons and the media. Participants will be drawn from 19 states in Northern Nigeria.
Participants must come from Northern Nigeria. Accomodation and Transportation will be provided for by the organisers.
